If you are ready to record a story on iTales.com, keep in mind the following:
Stories can be either fiction (make-believe) or non-fiction (real). Stories should not contain any content that is libelous, defamatory, or obscene.
iTales is a place for short audio stories. Stories should not be longer than 60 minutes.
Stories must be your original work or in the public domain. If the story is copywrited, you must have permission from the author to utilize the story. Stories should not violate any copyright, patent, privacy, publicity, trademark or trade secret. If you are using music or sound in your story, make sure you also have permission to use these as well. Some sounds and most music are copyrighted.
Remember, most product brand and business names are trademarked, so make sure you have any rights to use them in your story. If you are not sure, try to stay away from using brand names in your story. Once you record your own story, that is completely owned by you, it becomes yours forever. Placing a story on iTales does not transfer ownership…it will always by your own copyrighted story! You may want to note at the beginning of your story audio file your name and copyright information. For example, “This is a tale of a ghost who loved to eat broccoli …by John Doe…copyright 2006.”
Make sure you have good recording equipment. There are a lot of great options on the market today! Minimize background noises that can interfere with your story.
Save your story in MP3 format. Refer to the iTales technical FAQ section or the Technical Forum for more information on file formats.
Prices on iTales are determined by the storyteller and can be set anywhere above the minimum price of 49 cents per story. The minimum price helps cover the cost of storing the tales.
When setting a price for a story, it is recommended that the storyteller have a target price in mind. Researching costs for other stories is recommended – either on iTales, or by looking at storytelling tapes, CD’s or other sources.
Remember, storytellers have the ability to change their story prices at any time. So, if you feel you have over or underpriced your story, you can always go back and adjust the price.
The commission percentage remains the same, regardless of the story price, 40% of each sale.
Remember, we are a global site – a potentially huge audience. Your story could be heard around the world!
iTales cannot guarantee sale of your stories. Significant marketing efforts will be put into getting the iTales site into the consumer mindset, but the sale of any individual story or group of stories cannot be guaranteed.
Payment of Commissions
Commissions will be paid on a quarterly basis if and when your story commissions reach a minimum of $25.00 (U.S.). At the end of each year, you will be paid any remaining commission for that year.
Your story sales will be managed by the iTales merchant payment processor, Click&Buy. Remember - it is your responsibility to take care of any applicable sales or income tax on your sales and earnings from the site.
Remember – storytelling contributors can also listen and purchase stories on iTales. Check out what other storytellers are selling…browse the most popular stories and see what the audience likes. Remember, the audience is global - it will grow and change over time, so keep that in mind when you are submitting stories.
